A hypothetical community-based solution to help volunteers find opportunities that match their skills and interests.

Project Brief

The goal of this project was to propose a tool that helps get people more involved in helping their community or the world.

Project Overview

I created Serveskills - which makes it seamless to donate or serve skillset minimizing the time and research involved in finding causes and charities to which they can contribute their skills.

Initial Problem Discovery

What problem am I trying to solve?

"THE PURPOSE OF LIFE IS TO CONTRIBUTE IN SOME WAY TO MAKING THINGS BETTER.” – ROBERT F KENNEDY

Prospective volunteers need a better way to find volunteer opportunities that meet their skills and interests because of a lack of awareness of potential volunteer opportunities.

Initial Research / Problem Validation

Why is this problem important?

Turns out, nonprofit organizations are struggling to find workforce forcing elimination of services, affecting people/communities in need.

Understanding Target Audience

Whose problem am I solving?

According to the National Council of Nonprofits, there has been a rising demand for services among nonprofits in 2022. “2/3rd of non profits reported an increase in demand for their organizational services in 2022.”

Why does this matter?

The problem that hinders them from achieving their goal:

Within our community, many individuals are eager to assist the underprivileged but often encounter obstacles due to the absence of a suitable platform to contribute to causes they care about.

Research & Explanation

What methods of UX Research will I use to help drive clarity and focus to my solution, and why?

UX Research METHOD 01: SECONDARY RESEARCH

I initiated my secondary research by conducting online research, utilizing Google to find statistics on donations. My objective was to validate assumptions through a comprehensive examination of blogs, articles, and reliable statistics readily accessible on the internet.

UX Research METHOD 02: USER INTERVIEWS

To understand the users' needs and behaviors, I conducted in-depth interviews with eight individuals.

65%

of users experienced trouble trusting that organizations are using their donations appropriately.

of users look for organizations that target specific causes.

75%

of users would like to find all relevant info in one place.

100%

of users think there could be transparency around the impact their donations made.

What did I take away from my research?

“I want to be able to see the impact my contribution has made”

# 1

“$$$ seems impersonal”

# 2

“Haven’t come across any apps that easily find orgs to volunteer skills for”

# 3

Organizing the notes, quotes, and data from my research through affinity mapping.

Hypothesis Statement (SO WHAT)?

Prospective volunteers need a better way to find volunteer opportunities that meet their skills and interests because of a lack of awareness of potential volunteer opportunities.

Problem Statement

How might I create a seamless experience for prospective volunteers in finding opportunities that match their skills and interests?

Problem spaces

How am I going to address the problem spaces in my designs?

The main focus here is to provide a seamless method that can help an individual to come a step further in making a change, whether it's an organization in need or volunteers looking to support.

Goals:

  • Minimize the user’s research process outside of the app through a user friendly and intuitive interface.

  • Search and discover verified/legitimate charities in one place.

solution

An authentic application that makes it seamless to donate or serve skillset to support non profit organizations. This app can help users minimize the time and research involved in finding causes and charities to which they can contribute their skills.

user flows

Based on the findings during the research process I created userflows.

The Power of First Impressions

The onboarding screens serve as the gateway to the user experience, establishing the app's tone and value proposition. We prioritized user-friendliness and clear communication to ensure a smooth and informative introduction.

These are some initial sketches that provided a blueprint for our design process, kind of outlining the concept and foundation of our app.

Implementing feedback

implementing feedback based on the usability test conducted

Through usability testing, I considered suggestions and made changes. Initially our sign page had a lot of information to fill out. I introduced an additional screen to select needs/interests. Also, I included the “choose later” option to relieve pressure on users if they are unsure of their needs at the moment.

Things that I learned

  • Feedback is your friend! Fresh eyes caught those tiny details I totally missed. #lifesaver

  • Who knew picking the right words could be harder than picking colors? Turns out, it matters a lot!

  • Your brand is a story! Every design choice, from colors to shapes, adds a chapter.

If I had additional time, I would

Create user tests with validating metrics

Even if this is a hypothetical project, its very important to make sure that I am able to showcase that I have thought about how I am able to measure my impact.

Explore more in-depth UI trade offs

Under the class time constraints, I was not able to fully investigate all the possible trade-offs for my users. I want to showcase that I make purposeful decisions that impact my solution.

Create an interactive prototype with a narrative flow of my solutions

In order to fully capture the hypothetical experience of my solution, I want to revise the current prototype that I have to clarify my narrative.

You've reached the end, why not look at my other projects?
