In today's healthcare landscape, individuals with autoimmune diseases often face limitations due to a lack of focus on lifestyle change and a holistic approach.
Autoimmune diseases affect a staggering 1 in 15 people in the United States, impacting over 50 million Americans of which 78% are women.

Teaspoon app aims to address these challenges by introducing features that simplify data logging, progress tracking and gamification elements like rewards and challenges, a well curated content library featuring articles and disease specific forums and chats.
By implementing these solutions, we believe we can empower women to actively manage their health, build positive routines, and thrive.
Personalized Protocol
Onboarding Quiz generates a personalized protocol plan uncovering the root causes contributing to the user's symptoms and it helps the app tailor its other functionalities toward the user's diagnosis and needs.
Supportive Community
Escape the isolation. A thriving online community designed to empower women living with autoimmune diseases to connect, share experiences, offer encouragement, and overcome challenges together.
Clear Progress & Smart Rewards
Trackable progress indicators and a rewarding experience keep users motivated and on track with their personalized goals. This valuable data also allows Teaspoon Health to analyze user’s progress and continually refine its personalized protocols, ensuring the best possible outcomes for everyone.
RESEARCH
Understanding the problem
Firstly, we focused on gaining a deep understanding of autoimmune diseases.
USER INTERVIEWS
We conducted interviews and sent out a survey, sampling the experiences, challenges, and needs related to managing their autoimmune diseases. We also wanted to learn about their frustrations with existing tools and resources.
Organizing the notes, quotes, and data from our research through affinity mapping.
Our research led us to a few emerging patterns that guided our direction:

When flares get worse, it definitely is less motivating because it’s like, you're trying so hard to identify a pattern, but it’s super difficult.

I hate having to track my nutrition and daily habits in multiple places, it’s super tedious and meticulous and it gets too tough to keep up with it when you split it between work and life.
From this, we concluded...
Inefficiency is standing in the way of consistency of the remedies in their daily routines to manage their symptoms and good habits are taking too much effort to execute on.

DESIGN
Designing a simple and manageable experience
Working within well-defined product constraints, we designed a focused main user flow. This streamlined approach ensured a clear introduction to key features for first-time users, fostering an easy-to-use experience.
Brand Evolution: Infusing Joy and Renewal
Building on the Brand's Green Legacy:
Our analysis of Teaspoon Health's existing palette, coupled with color theory research highlighting green's association with optimism and health, informed the retention of a green-centric theme.
Balancing Green with Inspiration:
A contrasting light pink was introduced to capture user attention and add visual interest. This choice, ideal for the female-focused health app, aligns with research linking pink to renewal, inspiration, and healing.

This app is packed with design choices that all work together. As total design nerds (is it showing?), we really hope our passion for crafting this thing shines through when you use it. I’d like to walk you through 3 of the meaningful explorations that emerged from the many, many rounds of tinkering.
Which features should go on the nav bar?
No user left behind! We iterated on various user flow concepts, conducting user testing at each stage to guarantee an intuitive and interconnected experience.

From Maze to a solved Puzzle
Whew! We weren't quite there yet. Early versions felt like a rambling exploration, leaving users lost and unsure where to go next.
Enter Version 3! This time, we focused on creating a clear path with action and rewards, transforming the app from a disjointed collection of pages into a streamlined, goal-oriented experience.
How can I create emphasis by visually differentiating the home screen?
The home screen is the user's first impression and central hub within the app. Our challenge was to create a unique experience that stands out from other pages, while maintaining a cohesive visual language aligned with the established brand identity and layout.

How can we ensure a cohesive user experience through interactions?
Instead of focusing on flashy transitions, we prioritized consistent screen transitions throughout the app. To establish clear navigation and hierarchy between screens, we meticulously chose interaction styles that reinforced a unified spatial relationship.

Things that I learned
The Power of Feedback: Fresh perspectives are invaluable! Collaboration exposed design details we'd overlooked, leading to a more polished product.
Words Matter: Choosing the right language proved surprisingly challenging – just as important as visual design!
Holistic Branding: Every decision, from tone to color and shapes, contributes to a cohesive and impactful brand identity.

Create user tests with validating metrics
With each iteration of my design, I would like to conduct user tests to measure the impact of the product. I'm particularly interested in how user feedback shapes the design as new problems emerge within the space. This ensures the product remains relevant and addresses evolving user needs.
Explore more in-depth UI tradeoffs
Working within a limited timeframe, as a project lead I strategically focused on core functionalities. This enabled me to make well-considered design decisions that deliver the most value to users at launch while also providing business value.
Add more features to help the business
Limited time kept us from exploring all features. Future plans include integrating lab data and treatment phase stats for a win-win: boosted user engagement and valuable data for Teaspoon Health to personalize user journeys.
